Celebrating Accessibility in Caledon
By Cassandra Briscoe, Research Development Coordinator
The Town of Caledon and Mayor Allan Thompson hosted the inaugural Accessibility Award for Business ceremony at Town Hall on May 29th. Jonathan Weeden, President of KeyKeeper was present to accept the award, designed by Bianca Nam, a student at Robert F. Hall, on behalf of his Bolton Business.
KeyKeeper is just one of the community businesses who has found a new employee through Caledon Community Services’ Transitions program, which supports persons with disabilities in preparing for, obtaining and maintaining employment.
The presentation occurred at the perfect time, as Canadians across the country celebrated National Accessibility Week. For communities and workplaces that tirelessly promote inclusion and accessibility for all Canadians, National Accessibility Week is a chance to celebrate the individuals and groups who contribute to helping remove barriers.
Maureen Tymkow, Manger, Transitions at CCS is one of those individuals who has played a significant role in accessibility within Caledon and the Region of Peel. Tymkow regarded the presentation as a step in the right direction.
“This aligns with the ongoing mandate of our community, which is to eliminate the barriers that people with disabilities may have in our community,” said Tymkow.
Weeden praised Tymkow for giving him the opportunity to take action. “I approached CCS to help with a job posting and Maureen had a program in place and was able to suggest a member to join our team,” said Weeden. “It is really nice to be honoured like this by the community, however the real reward is the team member we picked up and how he contributes to our business.”
Weeden strongly suggests for other businesses within the Caledon community to reach out to CCS to see how CCS’ Transitions program can benefit their business. For him, it’s an added bonus to give Caledon residents a job in their own community.
“The Transitions Program has worked out fantastically for us,” said Weeden. I highly recommend it as a great program that I look forward to using again in the future.”
Congratulations to Weeden, KeyKeeper and Bianca Nam!
