To All our Volunteers, we say Thank You

by Chrissy Jarvie, Communications Lead

Often lauded for being a great place to live work and play, from our rolling hills to unique shops and restaurants, what truly makes Caledon special is people. People who show they care by giving back and volunteering their time and energy to helping others.

Annually in April, Canada celebrates National Volunteer Week. At Caledon Community Services (CCS) this is a chance to sing the praises of our volunteers and extend a special thank you to those who make time for us in their schedules, and their hearts.

Daily, staff and volunteers come together to work hand in hand, whether it’s pricing merchandise at Evolve, planning fantastic community events, leading workshops and sorting food at the Exchange or helping with admin tasks at the main office. Families with young children, seniors and youth all bridge the generation gap, working together and changing lives for the better across our Caledon community.

“It is so vital and important for me to volunteer,” said Lisa, one of our regular volunteers. “It is one concrete way for me to reach out and show love to my neighbour.”

And it’s not just a one-way street; volunteers often say they get back what they give or more, like learning new skills, networking, building confidence and making personal connections. Some volunteers are former CCS clients and give back the support two-fold. It all comes full circle.

Our volunteers make our work possible and they do it with a smile.

“It’s so much fun,” said Angeline, a student volunteer at Evolve Clothing. “More than I was expecting and everyone working here is great.”

In 2016-2017 CCS saw close to 200 volunteers come through our door, enriching our community, their own lives and the well-being of others. It’s vital to our work to have them in our corner, and while National Volunteer Week has come and gone for another year our gratitude is never-ending.

Thank you to all our volunteers. With a special shout out to Stephen Julien, Tracy Smale, Anne Thompson, Norma Calandra, Melodie Belusa and Nataliya Okun who have all won awards this year. It’s community spirit like yours that makes Caledon special.
